• The central government formulated National Education Policy (NEP) in August 2020 and had recommended offering technical courses in 11 regional colleges. 
• The AICTE recently permitted all the engineering colleges to offer engineering courses in 11 regional languages of Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Gujarati, Malayalam, Bengali, Assamese, Punjabi and Oriya, based on the recommendations of NEP.
• The prime minister recently inaugurated 14 colleges in eight states which offer engineering courses in regional languages
• The Curriculum translation has already begun in Kannada and will be implemented from the academic year 2022-23 and training of the faculty will be carried out by the VTU.
• There will be no effect on the job prospects for the engineering graduates from regional language backgrounds according to experts
• The regional language study acts as an added advantage because the students will be getting in-depth knowledge
• The students will be studying the technical terms in their mother tongue and retention of technical concepts will be excellent when compared to English terminologies.
• All the five colleges are already in the process of implementing regional technical study in different specialisations; while the Cambridge Institute of Technology claims to start a Kannada medium curriculum in Mechanical Engineering from academic year 2022-23.
